Oh anon, you’ve hit on my second-favorite Kel pairing too (okay I love Dom with her too but he’s practically canon and we all know that’s no fun ;) ). I noticed so, so many Merric/Kel moments rereading the series, and you can’t convince me he doesn’t have some sort of special feelings for her (then again, the same could be argued for pretty much ALL of her year-mates and Owen. Kel’s just that awesome). I absolutely love the way Merric takes Kel, and only Kel, aside before his Ordeal. He places an enormous amount of trust in her and you can really tell just how much her opinion means to him. I love the way Kel takes Merric’s sensitivity to her into account, the way she makes sure he has authority of his own as head of the patrol, and the way Merric just smiles wryly at her and reassures her that no, mother, I trust you in command because it’s you. He’s injured and he insists on being tied to his horse so he can go after Kel himself and see that she’s safe. Merric is such a tsundere around her (especially around the beginning) and I think that he’s really her best friend after Neal, however understated he seems.
