MONTY’S ULTIMATE WEBCOMIC RECS LIST

  • The Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal by E.K. Weaver: After calling off his arranged marriage and being disowned by his conservative parents, Amal wakes up to find a scraggly vagrant named TJ making breakfast in his kitchen. It turns out the night before, they made a drunken deal to drive from Berkeley to Providence together—Amal to attend his sister’s graduation, and TJ for reasons he cannot explain. What folds out next is the basic form of a road movie, with the relationship between the characters budding in a wonderfully realistic and dorky way. I own both of the TJ and Amal books and it’s safe to say that it’s probably one of my favorite webcomics ever.
  • Paranatural by Zack Morrison: Max, the new kid, moves into a convenience store with his space-cadet father and significantly smarter younger sister. After a rather hectic first day of school, he finds himself as the newest member of the (Paranatural) Activity Club, a group of students whose purpose is to keep the supernatural creatures in town in check, guide new spectrals like Max, and also just mess around. This is a young-adult friendly comic that could hold its own against any of the major kids’ cartoons on right now.
  • Sakana by Madeline Rupert: Sakana is about two brothers working at a fish market in Tokyo, and their co-workers and love interests. Rupert is brilliant at capturing motion and expressions. I have to admit, I’ve never related to a webcomic character more than Taro Sakana, for some reason.
  • Johnny Wander by Yuko Ota and Ananth Panagariya: This is a diary comic with a few occasional stories. Yuko’s art is really cute, and Ananth’s writing complements the illustrations well.
  • Best Friends Forever by Mickey: Despite the rumors, Vincent and Teddy are trying to stick together in their final year of high school. This is a bittersweet comic with some really lovely art.
  • Octopus Pie by Meredith Gran: This is a slice-of-life comic about Eve, a twentysomething living in Brooklyn, her stoner roommate Hanna, and their friends. The art gets more polished over time, and I guarantee you will fall in love with it.

quick-comix:

Tittle: TJ & Amal
Genre: slice of life, drama, romance
Author: E.K. Weaver
Rating: +17 (contains drug abuse, violence, strong sexual scenes  strong language)
Art: * * * *
Story: * * * * *
About:

In the span of a single day, Amal calls off his arranged marriage, comes out to his conservative parents, promptly gets disowned, goes on a bender… and wakes up the next morning to find TJ, a lanky, dreadlocked vagrant, frying eggs and singing Paul Simon in his kitchen.

TJ claims that the two have made a drunken pact to drive all the way from Berkeley to Providence. As it happens, Amal promised his sister he’d be there for her graduation from Brown University. And TJ, well… TJ has his own reasons.

The agreement is simple: Amal does the driving; TJ pays the way - but a 3500 mile journey leaves plenty of time for things to get complicated.

Probably already recommended this before but I’m going to do it again because it really is one of the most incredible (and realistic) webcomics I’ve come across.

Have I recommended Fumi Yoshinaga yet? No? That’s a crying shame because she is one of my favorite slice-of-life authors (with a deep love for food that just adds a special something to her works). My personal favorite is What Did You Eat Yesterday?, though she’s perhaps best known for Antique Bakery, which is very good as well. You can find a directory of her works here (plus Ooku, which for some reason is not listed). Oh, and she favors gay protagonists, though their sexuality is never the focus of her work.

Nine More Webcomics Recs (Happy Holidays!)

Ava’s Demon - In a distant future, young Ava flees her alien-desolated planet but can’t shake the cruel demon who preys on her mind and body.

Cucumber Quest - Cucumber would rather go to magic school and leave the hero-ing up to his younger sister, but with the Nightmare Knight threatening his kingdom, he might have to take a gap year.

The Fox Sister - In 1968 Korea, a young woman hunts for the kumiho that stalks the streets for victims, wearing the form of her dead sister.

Knights-Errant - Wilfred the Heartless joins the famed mercenary company, the Errant Knights, and has to take care not to get killed by enemies, racists, or his own brutal captain, Oswald.

The Less-Than-Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal - After coming out to his family and getting promptly disowned, Amal meets TJ, with whom he made a drunken deal: to split the cost of driving cross-country to attend Amal’s sister’s graduation.

Nimona - When professional villain Ballister Blackheart gets a new sidekick, he gets more than he bargained for: Nimona, a shapeshifter with pink hair and a habit of taking evil a little too far for even Blackheart’s taste.

Oglaf! - Various comics set in fantasy worlds, usually erotic and always hilarious. WARNING: Many comics are NSFW, but the archive offers plenty of help on which are suitable to view in public.

Plume - Armed with an immortal bodyguard and a gun, Vesper Grey ventures into the wild west to avenge her father’s murder.

Todd Allison and the Petunia Violet - Petunia tries to be a good neighbor and gets swept up with a government conspiracy, a hitman, a serial bomber, and numerous mysterious and equally ill-mannered people for her troubles.

Seconding these, they’re all incredible :)

Manga rec time! Sometimes I get nostalgic and certain series just come unbidden to my mind – in this case, it’s Miriam. Kyouko Hikawa is probably better known for From Far Away (which is quite a good series as well), but my favorite work of hers is Miriam for its charming, headstrong female lead and the excellent fluidity/pacing (Hikawa’s style is a bit old-school but I think the art is excellent regardless). Mangaupdates has a pretty good summary: “This is a cowboy shoujo manga set in the Wild West. Miriam is an orphan. Her father was a drunken gambler; she only had one dress and they moved from place to place, until one day her father died and Grace took her in. The series follows Miriam’s life, growing up, and falling in love with her life-long friend, the skillful sharpshooter Douglas.” I think the age gap is handled very well, and I really like the main couple. Been rewatching/rereading BECK recently and it’s still incredible (the art starts out a bit choppy but it improves dramatically, as you can see above). Definitely my favorite slice-of-life manga in the music genre. You can read it here!
