Hey Minuiko :) I've noticed that you're a big fan of Merric or rather MerricxKel. I've always struggled to get a good sense of what Merric is like. I know that he is hot tempered and that he was bullied but I feel that there is more to his character that I'm not getting. How would you describe him?

I’d say that’s the gist of Merric’s character, but what I like about him is that he’s the hot-tempered type that’s also really submissive to conventional authority (or people he respects), and this makes his interactions with Kel really interesting to me. It’s just fascinating to see the way she’s able to really temper him and hold him back from doing rash things, and the way she sort of - opens his mind, in a way? Merric seems like the type to fly off the handle, but I feel like he really does things by the book and doesn’t question social norms, whereas Kel, while super chivalrous and straightlaced, acts according to her own principles. Because of his conventional thinking, Kel is sort of afraid he’ll feel offended that she’s commanding him (and maybe he would be, if it were another of their yearmates, but it’s Kel and he’d follow her anywhere), which of course he doesn’t. Many of my favorite moments in the series are between them - when she asks teases him when he’s injured by bandits, when she holds onto him to prevent him from directly confronting Joren+co at the Midwinter Banquet in Page, when he takes her (and only her) aside before his Ordeal and asks her if she’s scared too, the way he calls her Mother, when he asks to be tied to his horse even though he’s injured so he can follow after her, I just, I just love them so much v.v
